AFTER FOREVER, 2004 (NL+E)

ENGLISH:

After the show at Dauwpop, founder member, composer and guitarist Sander Gommans of After Forever found the time for an interview about the band's forthcoming album with the working title Remagine.

Well, Sander it has been a hectic time for you and the band. First drummer André Borgman was diagnosed to have cancer and during your stay at Wolfsburg for the final mixing of Remagine you became ill. You ended up in the hospital to have your appendix taken out!

"Yes, it was very hectic indeed and I must admit I’ve taken the surgery performed on myself, a bit too lightly. Although I spent a whole week in the hospital, the moment I got out of there I went back to the Gate-studio to work on the album again and as soon as this was finished I went back to my work as a teacher. It turned out to be a little too much and I must take it a bit more slowly at the moment, that’s why we had someone else doing the grunts today! By the way, even more misfortune came across our path: at the same time when André was diagnosed with cancer two close friends and important members of our fanclub were diagnosed with cancer too, so this was all very depressing. Fortunately the album was finished yesterday and we are very satisfied with the result and really, we needed something positive to happen! As far as André is concerned: yesterday, we got word from the hospital that the cancer is well under control and although he might be forced to go through one more surgery, as of now he is considered cured, so that’s really wonderful news for each and everyone of us."

When did you start working on Remagine?

"To be honest, Remagine is still not decided to be the new title of the next album, but because of the fact that several songs are about dreams, memories and imagining, it felt like an adequate title. It's still a subject of discussion. One of the problems seems to be that the word remagine in South America might evoke some less positive associations."

Did André still manage to do the drums for the new album?Yes, André played drums on all pre-productions and luckily the quality of those recordings was good enough to use them for the new album, which is of course terrific. Despite that and the fact that André was involved in the mixing process, I’ve sent him every update there was, still his illness kept him from being as involved as he used to be. But, after hearing the good news, we hope he will be able to participate full strength again by next fall. As for the new songs, I guess we started working on them as early as last summer."

I understood Joost van den Broek has made some contributions to this album. Will it be a concept album again, are there any new developments?

"Joost’s input really stunned me. He went from Enschede to Reuver (over two hours by car, MvBF) every week mostly for about two days for weeks in a row. How he manages to combine it with all his other activities and education is a big question mark for me. He co-wrote practically every of the twelve new songs and he also wrote all of the arrangements for strings and such. Great job he did! As usual Floor Jansen attended to the vocal lines and melodies herself. The new album will definitely not be a concept album. We have deliberately chosen for an approach based on catchy melodies rather than melodramatic more complex music and orchestrations alternating guitar riffs. This time the strings are more to emphasize the riffs instead of making the guitars sound mellower. I think we have succeeded in making an album that sounds really fresh and again, after all the misery we went through, we feel the need to have a positive mind and when we go on a promotional tour we will enjoy playing these new songs very much! Besides I think this album is again a step forward for the band in the direction where we’d like to go!"

You didn’t go to Wolfsburg to record the entire album, did you?
"No, we didn’t. From the early days on, as a band we have always tried to be in control about what we do musically. I think our pre-productions are of such a high quality that they sound almost like a finished product. In the last year I expanded my studio at home and with the addition of some of the gear Joost uses, we have excellent equipment altogether. We plan to invest more money so this studio will be expanded even more! Another reason to record once again in the Excess Studio in Rotterdam, is our previous experiences with producer Hans Pieters. He knows how to do an excellent job without the urge to make alterations in our music and we value this very much, because so many producers tend to make a lot of alterations to songs or even re-write them completely! Of coarse Sascha Paeth does the mix and if he comes up with a different idea about how he feels the music should sound, we carefully consider his suggestions. However, the most important reason to choose for the Gate Studios is that Amanda Sommerville is a great tutor for Floor and she has the capability to have Floor record her vocals with the very best possible results!

There’s a lot of competition at the moment. Bands like Nightwish, but also Within Temptation, Epica, Nemesea etcetera: do you even listen to their music?"

"No, not at all. Although I’m impressed by the way Within Temptation has developed, I never listen to this genre of music, in fact I never have!! It’s kind of funny because I’ve always listened to bands like Dream Theater or Judas Priest and I still do, and for years now I find myself playing this kind of gothic rock! Anyway, if you’d ask me which way I would like to go with the band, than listening to the new album might give you an idea. For me it’s the best one to date, but we will surely keep on trying to combine catchy songs with improved performances on all instruments, so just maybe even a little more in the vein of Dream Theater."

Talking about controlling your music: does record company Transmission Records have a lot of influence in what you want to do musically?

"Ha, ha, that’s an odd question, no just kidding, it isn’t. I know there are some rumours about Hans van Vuuren, but our cooperation with him so far has been very satisfactory and believe it or not he gives us total artistic freedom! From colleagues who have a contract with another company, I hear quite different stories, so I think in that respect we may consider ourselves very fortunate. Of course Hans makes all the decisions about the policy when to release an album, what track or tracks should be released as a single and anything in relation to special editions and so forth. By the way, we have fulfilled our obligations to Transmission Records as soon as the new album will be released so at the moment we are considering our options, trying to find a good record deal. Transmission has really been very good to us in the past, but you know, this is a difficult business and you have to go for the best offer that comes along, so…time will tell!"

What about fhe future plans for After Forever?

"Well, all the work on the album is finished so I guess we are entitled to a sort of a break. We will play a number of festivals in the summer and because the new album is due to be released early September we will have to start rehearsing in time for the promotional tour and hopefully André will be back by then!"

We'd all wish André to be back soon, so let's hope we'll see a revitalised band in the autumn. Good luck with both the album and with getting a spelndid record deal!

"Thanks Menno, it was a pleasure talking with you!"
